More about our Pilot Issue Theme: Global AIDS.

Our pilot issue spotlights important voices and topics in global AIDS, and is launching in time for AIDS2008, the biannual International AIDS Conference, held this year in Mexico City, Aug. 3-8.

GUESTS & TOPICS:

Our pilot issue features a conversation with a very special guest: the visionary and outspoken Canadian leader Stephen Lewis, the former US Envoy on AIDS to Africa. He talks about what he learned on the job, what hasn't happened in AIDS but could, and what he's most excited about as he continues pushing global leaders to greater action on this great pandemic of our time.

Other guests include:

● Paula Donovan, who launched AIDS-Free World with Stephen Lewis, and is a women's rights advocate with long experience working at the UN. , Paula and Stephen are pushing for creation a new UN Agency for Women - an ambitious vision.

● Heal Africa, in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. We present a visit to the Heal Africa fistula clinic and program, which represents a bright spot in the ongoing tragedy of war in the Congo and a successful model for others hoping to help survivors of wartime sexual violence.

●Our special additional feature is a preview trailer of Lisa F. Jackson's award-winning film 'The Greatest Silence.' Her film features the voices of women rape survivors in the Congo, the men who perpetrate wartime rape, and the brave actions of a Congolese policewoman and her dedicated staff as they try to advocate for justice to address these sexual crimes.

An important new film by Emmy-award winner and documentarian Lisa F. Jackson.

Congo -- The story of war and rape in the Congo, and the struggles of women there to survive and rebuild their lives, has been captured in a new film, 'The Greatest Silence,' by documentary filmmaker Lisa F. Jackson of Jackson Films. Her film takes a very intimate approach to the story of war and rape in the Congo when Jackson reveals that she, too, is a survivor of rape. In sharing her story with women in the Congo, Jackson takes her audience closer into the lives and suffering - and healing -- of Congolese women and their communities.

The film also gives voice to the perpetrators of rape. Jackson ventures into the bush to briefly interview young men inducted into a brutal bush war who openly reveal why they rape and what they think of their actions.

"The Greatest Silence" has already won a Sundance 2008 Special Jury Prize: Documentary. It is serving as a tool for advocacy by groups worldwide who are mobilizing to help end the war in the Congo. Jackson has appeared before Congress to push US and global leaders to take urgent and meaningful action to stop the use of mass rape as a tool of war in the Congo, to help protect Congolese women and children suffering ongoing rapes, and to seek emergency medical and HIV care justice for survivors of wartime rape.

Lyn Lusi -- Founder of HEAL Africa
Lyn was born and educated in England, and went to Congo in 1971 as a teacher with the Baptist Missionary Society. She married Dr. Jo Lusi in 1974. After their marriage, she worked in school and hospital administration in northeastern Congo (Nyankunde) for 19 years.

In 1993, she joined MAP International in Nairobi as Resource Development officer. Part of her work involved developing curricula for HIV/AIDS awareness which is now being used in a number of countries. The war prevented her from joining Jo in Congo in 1996; instead, Lyn set up the Community Based Rehabilitation program for CBM in Rwanda, and worked on her Masters Degree in Human Resource Development and Training. In 1999, she joined DOCS HEAL Africa in Goma as Program Manager and has expanded the Learning Center Hospital's programs to include Family Planning, Safe Motherhood, Women Against Violence, AIDS Education and Homecare, and Community Rehabilitation. She brings formidable administrative skills, talent for developing people and programs and a strong commitment to Congo.

http://healafrica.org/cms/

What Makes HEAL Africa Different?

HEAL Africa is distinctive from many charities: it's a small, grass-roots organization that has low administrative overheads because it is led by locally-based program directors, is focused on treating people holistically, and has a primary focus of training and equipping new leaders for the long-term, rather than just solving short term needs.

Here's a run-down of other ways in which we see HEAL Africa as being unique:

  • Dr Lusi in an Orthopedic wardEquips emerging leaders: HEAL Africa's primary focus is to train and enable healthcare providers and activists who are engaged in community-based healing in the context of community. Not only are others equipped in new approaches, the impact is multiplied. Leadership development is a key ingredient.

  • Geographical focus: HEAL Africa is working in eastern Congo, the Great Lakes Region, and the conflict-ridden French-speaking center of Africa.

  • Sector focus: Rural resource-poor regions. Resource-poor in terms of infrastructure and access to basic services for most of its population.

  • Holistic approach: In a world of increasing specialization (including the humanitarian efforts), HEAL Africa recognizes the importance of interventions that are integrated, whether that is medical, social, or spiritual. The goal of HEAL Africa is to see transformed societies: transformed from within.

  • Inclusive: Through working through the faith-based community in Congo, HEAL Africa has the potential to reach 95% of the population. All faith communities in the areas HEAL Africa's programs work are actively involved (Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Kimbanguist) as are local and national governments and international organizations (UNICEF and others). The result: HEAL Africa commands high respect locally.

  • Consortium spirit: Due to HEAL Africa's high credibility locally and the commitment to work within multiple partnerships, HEAL Africa has facilitated several coalitions to address community-wide issues, such as: HIV/AIDS, sexual violence, early childhood development, safe motherhood and child sorcery.

  • Indigenous leadership: HEAL Africa was founded by Dr. Kasereka ("Jo") Lusi, a Christian Congolese orthopedic surgeon, and his social activist/administrator wife, Lyn. They have based their entire working lives in Congo, with several years of experience in Nairobi and in Rwanda. They are widely known and respected both in Goma and internationally for the work they have done. The challenge to international organizations is to obtain local ownership to increase likelihood of success and sustainable interventions. All of the work that HEAL Africa does is owned by its local leadership. Sustainability is built in from the beginning! Furthermore, HEAL Africa's staff represents tribes from all over Congo.
